The Sasquatch Scramble, a race inspired by the Amazing Race reality show, is coming to Valemount in June.
The event is being organized by youth, for youth, through a sponsorship by the Columbia Basin Trust.
Jared Smith, one of the organizers of the Scramble, has hired high school students to come up with the challenges that will hamper the teams of three in their quest to get to the finish line first.
Smith is welcoming teams between the ages of 16 to 26 from all over the region. He’s hoping that there will be teams from outside of Valemount participating in the race.
The race will not be physically focused, and will have teams solve riddles and puzzles around Valemount, similar to the Amazing Race, over a five to six hour course. The challenges will rely on team work and will tackle different skill sets such as problem solving, navigation and communication.
It’s the first time the race has been held, but Smith hopes that if the event is successful, it could happen as an annual event.
The race, to be held on June 25, will be followed by an awards ceremony and a barbecue to celebrate the participants and winners.
“It’s going to be a really fun weekend for everyone,” said Smith. “Although the actual race will take a day, there will be a welcome reception and awards ceremony which make it a great opportunity to make it into a weekend camping trip.”
Smith said the event will be a great opportunity to meet some new people while doing something a bit different and interesting. The race will be non-competitive.
