A two-year-old girl was struck and killed by a vehicle in Hinton on Saturday.

The girl was hit in the parking lot of Carlyle Estates condo complex at 109 Seabolt Dr. around 5pm while momentarily out of sight of her parents.

According to Hinton RCMP there were no eye witnesses, and the driver of the vehicle left the scene, leaving parents and police unable to know the circumstances of how the child may have been struck.

The girl was rushed to the hospital by her parents and later died as a result of the injuries.

“It’s still an ongoing investigation,” said Hinton RCMP Cst. T. Jeffrey on Monday.

According to reports by the Edmonton Journal, the girl wandered about 25 metres away from a yard sale that her parents were having when she was run over in the parking lot. RCMP suspect the girl walked in front of the parkade door when a vehicle either entering or exiting the door struck her.

When her parents found the girl there was no sign of a vehicle, but police have determined that a ‘vehicle of interest’ also inadvertently drove through a pool of blood in front of the parkade entrance, but wasn’t involved in the collision.

RCMP have yet to release the identity of the girl.

If anyone has any information regarding the collision, saw the girl or witnessed any collision involving a child, they are asked to contact the Hinton RCMP at 780-865-2455 or the 24-hour complaint number at 780-865-5544.

Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-8477.
