Jasperites helped raise more than $2.3 million for the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

Peter Hayashi, former owner of Cavell Drugs, helped raise $37,000 for the hospital  with a Miracle Builder’s breakfast at the Sawridge Inn last month. “We hoped to get 35, but 100 people showed up,” Hayashi said.

Hayashi has seen first hand the importance of the children’s hospital. His daughter Sarah was diagnosed with diabetes at 18 month old, and required care at the hospital. After the visit, Hayashi ensured he got involved with the fundraising efforts.

“It played an important role in our life,” Hayashi said.

Hayashi was asked by the organizers to run the breakfast, and he was more than happy to help out.

The breakfast also featured Dr. Laurence Lequir, a pediatric doctor in the intensive care unit at the Stollery hospital, and 18-year-old Brayden Mole, who has had four brain surgeries at the hospital. Mole has raised about $600,000 for the hospital in the past eight years.

“That really set the tone for the weekend,” Hayashi said.

The highlight of the weekend included a $500,000 donation from Rexall’s Daryl Katz, which was matched by Premier Ed Stelmach. All of the money is going to a new emergency ward.

Several former Edmonton Oilers alumni also took part in a golf tournament at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, such as Glen Sather and Kevin Lowe. Hayashi got the chance to golf with Marty McSorley and the foursome was only one stroke back of the winners.

He said many Jasper residents volunteered for the event.

“I was very proud to be from Jasper,” Hayashi said.

This was the second time the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge hosted the fundraiser. In 2007, $1 million was raised by the event for the hospital.
