Jasperites will be treated to a taste of one of Canada’s Juno-nominated musicians next Tuesday when the Marc Atkinson Trio comes to town.

The B.C.-based trio, consisting of Marc Atkinson on acoustic guitar, Joey Smith on stand-up bass and Reuben Wier on acoustic rhythm guitar will offer a “high energy and fun” evening with a mixture of folk and jazz music. “It’s the kind you’d want to bring home with you,” said the trio’s front man and composer Marc Atkinson.

“Our music fits in between [folk and jazz], which is kind of nice for us because we’re playing instrumental music but it’s very accessible to a wide range of listeners and that works out great,” he said. “We like to stretch the boundaries and the possibilities of what you can do with these three instruments.”

Touring their fourth album in eight years, Atkinson believes it has a “unique sound” as he has returned to his roots. “There’s a little bit more finger style (guitar) and finer picking stuff on this latest recording,” he said.

Finding a balance between rehearsed performances and improvised music, the trio like to keep things “fresh” for both the audience and themselves. “I like to compose the music so that it always has that built into it. So each night and performance is different and you never know what’s going to happen,” said the composer. 

While the trio plays mostly music composed by Atkinson they often rearrange classical pieces or old “recognizable melodies from the past,” he said.

The group will play at the Jasper Activity Centre on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be on sale at the door for $15 for adults and $5 for students or youth.
