Jasper represents in the water
The Jasper River Dragons hit the water over the weekend at the Bonnie Doon Leisure Centre in Edmonton, coming in fourth out of 11 teams competing in the Provincial Pool Lifesaving Championships.
With about 17 swimmers on the team, with members from seven years old and up, the team took part in a range of events that aimed to simulate life rescuing missions that would happen both in the pool and the ocean including obstacle swims and various technical mannequin rescues.
“One of the things that’s great about this sport is that all the events are based on actual life saving jobs you would have to do,” said Christopher Read, Aquatic Centre manager and River Dragons team member. “These kids are actually learning something that if they become life guards will use again and again.”
For a community of the size of Jasper, Read said the team “dominated” the events, given they were competing against teams that consisted of up to 50 members.
Cailyn Sherlow and Heidi Schaefer both broke provincial records for their age groups in the 50 meter mannequin carry, while other teammates were asked to attend the Alberta provincial team’s training camp.
Read commended the teams 17-year-old coaches, Clara Waxer and Jenna Jackson, for their dedication and planning. They were mentored throughout the season by member Gerrad Lewin.
The Jasper River Dragons team represented with 10 juniors, who are 15 years and under, five seniors, who are 16 to 30 year-olds and two masters competitors who are 30 years plus. Each member took part in four events each day.
The team trains twice a week, divided by age group, in preparation for competitions like these and were presented with their medals from the event on Wednesday, March 25. |
